Hi, my name is Emma Fisher. I’m an author-illustrator based in San Francisco and New York City.
Spanning picture books to illustrated novels, my work draws from the visual and literary vocabulary of fables to encourage young readers to cultivate a deep attention to our strange and beautiful world. I layer printmaking, painting, and collage to create richly textured illustrations rooted in play and experimentation.
I earned my MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts, where I received the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award. I also hold a BA in Art History from Brown University and a certificate in disability studies from CUNY. I worked in apparel design before deciding I couldn't imagine a life better spent than inventing stories for children.
Some of my work draws on personal experience with disabling chronic illness to explore the ways pain reshapes the mind and body. I’m lucky to serve on the board of Creativity Explored, a San Francisco arts organization supporting artists with developmental disabilities.
