When I moved to New York, I was awed by the attention people put into how they appear to others in this city - mostly through dress, but also hair, makeup, and even how they sit or stand. As a former clothing designer, I can’t help but notice on how people craft their presentation of self through these external markers. I gave myself very few constrictions or boundaries with this project. I went out with my small black sketchbook, a fountain pen, and a few colors to document those that caught my interest, whether for their choice of a brightly colored coat or something more indefinable. In the process, I became more confident with my line, growing used to drawing quickly and in public.
